Mr Burke pointed out that if British and Irish hauliers did not fit tachos for national journeys it could lead to a distortion of competition between them and Continental drivers who have to fit tachos, even if they do not make international journeys.
The tacho question also comes under Social Affairs Commissioner Henk Vredeling.
Mr Burke said he liked the idea of comparison but said the Commission wpuld not be involved in any way and would not be encouraged by its findings.
A European Commission spokesman described Mr Jones as the most important opponent of the tacho on the union side and said that he and Mr Burke parted cordially.
