FARES in Glasgow may be put up in June to pay for the higher wages awarded to crews. A sub-committee is studying suggestions by Mr. E. R. L. Fitzpayne, general manager of the transport. department, for amendments to the fares structure.
He has proposed that the attendancebonus scheme, which costs £120,000 a year, should be reviewed, and that weekly tram and trolleybus tickets be withdrawn.
Other proposals affect old and blind people and children. Each year, 13,000 permit i are issued to old-age pensioners at a cost of £220,000. Mr. Fitzpayne thinks that the permits should be dearer, or that the age level for them should be raised.
Another 2,000 passes are distributed to blind persons. The price of £3 should be advanced to £7 10s., Mr. Fitzpayne has suggested. Children's weekly tickets should go up from 4s. by Is. 6d. or 2s. 6d.
The _wage awards will .cost Glasgow £377,000 a year. The department last year lost £30,000, although the deficit had been expected to be 1100,000.
