AN articulated refrigerator vehicle for the transport of 3,200 gallons of ice-cream in bulk and in small packages has recently been placed in service in New. Zealand. The refrigeration equipment and body were produced by McAlpine Refrigeration, Ltd., Auckland, and a Leyland Comet EC0.3R tractor unit is employed. The Tip Top Ice Cream Co. (Wellington), Ltd., is using the vehicle for longdistance work, and the load can be kept at a temperature as low as —10 degrees F,
The van body is 25 ft. long, slightly under 8 ft. wide, and 9 ft. 6 ins, high from the ground, and has a capacity of 680 cubic ft. The overall length of the outfit is 33 ft.
There are three refrigerated compartments, two of which have more than 6 ft. of headroom. In front is a special condensing unit powered by a 3 h.p three-phase 400-volt motor and a two-cylindered vertical reciprocating compressor operating with Freon refrigerant.
The three compartments are individually cooled, each 'having its own direct-expansion coil system. Cooling coils are built up from more than 1,800 ft. of -in.-diameter copper tubing. Dial thermometers mounted outside of the vehicle show the internal temperature.
The body is fully sealed and the interior is ventilated. It has two beech frames with exterior panels of aluminium and inner panels of resinbonded plywood. The exterior is covered with twin layers of Onazote insulation material 2 ins. thick.
The complete unit weighs tons II cwt., and has a payload of slightly more than 7 tons.
