Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AMONG the three new models which were exhibited at Earls Court, last November, by the Maudslay Motor Co., Ltd., Parkside, Coventry, considerable interest was evinced in the Mogul 7i-tormer, which is a light, bigcapacity goods-vehicle .failing within the 4-ton taxation class, and costing, to-day, £775.

This machine is now in production, accordingly, a description amplifying the brief notes, which we were able to publish about it when it made its first appearance, is appropriate.

It has been designed and built with a view to combining first-rate performance with reliability and the minimum of maintenance, whilst, as mentioned above, weight has been kept down and high quality for moderate cost has been borne in mind.

Three-point mounted, the fourcylindered petrol engine has bore and stroke dimensions of 114 mm. and 130 mm. respectively, is rated at 32.4 h.p. and develops 79 b.h.p. Dynamically and statically balanced, the large-diameter crankshaft has five bearings. There is an overhead camshaft, driven by an enclosed vertical shaft, through spiral-bevel gears, a sluing coupling being incorporated in the drive to permit easy removal of the one-piece cylinder head.

The connecting rods are of tubular section and are fitted with hollow circlip-retained floating gudgeon pins. which carry light alloy pistons. These are extra long and each has three compression rings and one scraper ring.

In the lubrication system, which supplies oil under pressure to the main and big-end bearings, there is an accessibly mounted Auto-Klean filter.

In order that the carburetter may be clear of other auxiliaries, it is mounted on the near side. A hot-spot is incorporated in the indUction system. Ignition is by magneto, this being driven by a coupling permitting accurate adjustment of the timing. An advance and retard hand control is provided.

A constant-voltage dynamo is placed on the off side in an accessible position, and is driven by silent chain. In front of it is the centrifugal water pump, whilst a ball-bearing fan draws air through a large gilled-tube radiator of new and pleasing design.

fis an alternative to the petrol engine a Gardner 4LW oil unit is offered, which raises the weight by 4 cwt. and the price by £220.

Considerable interest attaches to the frame construction. Straight I-section girders form the main side members, and these are braced by large-diameter tubes, flanged and bolted to the longitudinals. Mounted on rubber, is a channel-section subframe which carries the engine and gearbox, which are thus insulated from the main frame.

Separate from the power unit is a four-speed gearbox of modern design, and the drive is conveyed thence by a tubular shaft, having Hardy-Spicer universal joints, to a banjo-type axle made from the solid in nickel-chrome steel. Final drive is by overhead worm.

Braking is by the Dewandre vacuum-servo system, there being separate cylinders for the two front wheels, and by hand lever to only the rear wheels. For the steering gear Idarles apparatus is employed. • Noteworthy features of the suspension system are long springs of highgrade steel, which are practically flat when under load, overlapping second plates, and spring eyes having renewable bushes.

With a 15-ft. wheelbase, the Mogul chassis has an overall length of 23 ft. 6 ins, and affords a body space of 19 ft. measured to the end of the frame. It weighs 3 tons S qrs. and has 36 by 8 H.D. tyres.

In connection with the production and sales plans for this and other Maudslay chassis, the company, we understand, is appointing distributors all over the country, so that both sales and service can receive thorough and comprehensive attention,
