Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

But judging by its time with us so far, the Caddy has confirmed its status as the best car-derived van (CDV) in the business.

The main reason for that success is that it retains enough of the car that spawned it to offer style and performance without compromising its abilities as a working CV.

If you have driven a Golf or Touren you will know what we mean; if not, then 90 minutes in this CDV would provide food for thought next time you change motors.

The key development is the 1.9-litre 105hp TDi engine. It is strong and competes happily with traffic whether in town or out on the open road. Roadworks aside, this van will get there on time, helped by a slick-shifting manual fivespeed box.

The driving position is initially comfortable but adjustment is limited choose between low and back or up and forward. Over longer journeys this lack of options can prove uncomfortable, especially for long-legged drivers. Speaking of which, your left foot has a small platform to rest on, which is nice, but that leaves your leg resting against the centre console where two sections meet, which is not so nice.

Fuel economy has been consistent, although regular motorway runs have inevitably taken their toll.

The Caddy's first service cost £91.59, but our second trip to the workshop, at 20,000 miles, bit much deeper into our pocket. Besides £100.80 for labour there were new filters, windscreen blades, screen wash and 'plug', totalling £43.54, as well as 4.5 litres of Castrol TXT which came to £43.92. It all added up to £188.26 (ex-VAT).

There aren't any malor weak spots in the Caddy; in fact our complaints are restricted to the high windscreen and limited seating options.

And when all's said and done, if thats all a driver has to complain about he can consider himself unusually lucky.

So far, so good. The Caddy has proved effortless to drive and has enough about it to make you eager for another trip to the shops, even after 20,000 miles.

The second service cost twice as much as the first but oil changes, filters and new blades aren't the end of the world. Roll on the next 10,000 miles.
