Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Removals firm Brewer and Turnbull has signed up the first of its target of 14 franchisees, Edinburgh-based Broughton Removals.

Under the <6,000 franchise deal, Broughton will operate one liveried vehicle for Brewers, which owner Charles Munro may increase to two depending on "how business builds up".

The 16-year-old family firm, which now has a total of seven vans and a staff of 12 including Munro's two sons, runs a large container base at Leith Docks.

Under the agreement, Broughton Removals pays a 4% royalty on its yearly de dared turnover, plus a £150 monthly fee for marketing services. Munro began to look at the franchise possibility after his son spotted an article in Commercial Motor (17-23 Aug) on Brewer and Turnbull's planned franchising programme.

Munro hopes the deal will mean fewer runs with empty vans back from England—he will be able to pick up from Brewer and Turnbull depots throughout the country.

Brewer and Turnbull commercial and franchise manager Pamela Flanagan reports that a further franchise deal is in the offing. It would open up business in Glasgow and Dundee.
