• Simon Engineering of Dudley, West Midlands unveiled its long-awaited ST telescopic platform firefighting and rescue appliance at the Fire International exhibition. It is based on a Volvo FL10 6 x4 chassis and built to JCDD and DIN standards.
The ST240-S model for 4x2 17-tonne chassis, and the ST300-S for 24.39-tonners, have 25.5m and 31.5m working heights respectively, with full turntable rotation. Both have a maximum outreach of 19 metres with 400kg cage loading, and a 15m outreach at 6.0m below ground level, A microprocessor system provides proportional control at either end for smooth operation, and its water nozzle discharges at over 2,275 litres per minute.
Simon claims compactness for travelling access with a 10m overall length and 3.3m height, depending on the chassis used. The 31.5m model exhibited is destined for the South Yorkshire Fire Brigade; Derbyshire and Somerset have also placed orders, and other appliances are destined for marine industry applications in Finland.
