THE TRANSPORT Salaried Staff Association has spoken out against the proposed shutdown of six National Freight Corporation Roadline depots (CM August 31).

Last month the TSSA held joint discussion with Roadline management and other unions and agreed that "there was an urgent need for change in the Roadline Group".

But the TSSA does not agree with the management's proposals to shut the six depots at Stratford, Slough, King's Lynn, Luton, Leeds and Newport.

The company's management also wants to review and rationalise other depots at Liverpool and Birmingham which, claims the TSSA, would mean redundancies.

Speaking for the TSSA. assistant general secretary Bert Lyons said: "We have made our views known to the NFC and will continue to be involved in these very controversial proposals".

The reasons for the planned depot closures is the por performance by Roadline. In the first half of the year the company has lost more than E2m.
