THE FREIGHT Transport Association has criticised the composition of the body of advisers who will be assisting Sir Arthur Armitage, the Government's independent investigator into lorries and the environment.
It is "acutely disappointed at the composition of the committee," which it says is unbalanced.
But despite the reaction FTA has made it plain that it will not be pressing a case for a representative committee because "it understood the practical difficulties involved."
Now FTA has told Transport Minister Norman Fowler: "There are no doubt, good reasons for the appointment of each member of the panel of assessors but the panel is now composed of people who have no practical knowledge of the transport industry."
It added that there is also a strong "environmental" thread running through the composition of the panel.
The Road Haulage Association said that it, too, had noted the "environmental" bias, but a spokesman added that the panel are only advisers "and we have great faith in the impartiality of the chairman.
"We are sure that Sir Arthur Armitage will give due consideration to the transport industry," said the spokesman.
