Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TRAILER manufacturers' exhibits at Earls Court will reflect not only the progress in design that they have made but also hauliers' increasing interest in the use of articulated vehicles. Potential buyers will have a wide choice among the 'various makes, each of which will have something distinctive to offer. _ Semi-trailers with detachable rear axles, intended mainly for the transport of machinery and building plant, will be exhibited by five makers in capacities ranging from 10-60 tons. The loading , space of the 45-60-ton model made by R. A. Dyson and Co., Ltd. (Stand 90), is 25 ft. long and 9 ft. wide. Their 25-30-ton type will have a poweroperated winch.

Eagle Engineering Co., Ltd., will display a 25-tanner with a 4-ton winch on Stand 126, and Cranes (Dereham), Ltd., a 30-tonner with cranked frame on Stand 106. Suspension of this model is of the Crane trunnion type, affording even load distribution on the tyres.

Hands (Letchworth), Ltd. (Stand 121), will show a 10-ton outfit with a 17-ft, well and GJ universal automatic pick-up gear.

The 104on drop-framed machinery transporter to be displayed on Stand 118 by Taskers of Andover (1932), Ltd., will be a new design. The rear-wheel assembly may be detached without disturbing the brake gear. Space available for payload is 16 ft. long by 7 ft. 6 in. wide. Tyres are sized 9.00-20 (12-ply-rating) General Transport Models For general transport work, . nine makers will show platform semi-trailers with capacities from 15 cwt.-16 tons. A Crane 16-ton vehicle, designed for the transport of steel billets, will be included. It is based on a standard chassis stressed for maximum permissible payloads and incorporates frame members of pressed high-tensile steel. Built to the requirements of British Road Services, the Crane 10-12tonner will have a light-alloy body with timber flooring.

A 15-16-ton semi-trailer available for inspection on Stand 113 will incorporate a quick-coupling turntable. A product of Carrimorc Six Wheelers, Ltd., this vehicle will have a twin-rear-axle c.42

assembly with universally mounted radius rods to control axle movement and brake torque. The body is .26 ft. 5 in long and 8 ft. wide.

The Carrimore 5-6 ton semi-cranked-frame unit will also have a quickcoupling turntable and will be exhibited with a .22-ft.long composite van body with a roller shutter at the rear.

A 15-ton semi-trailer 24 ft. long and 8 ft. wide may .• be inspected on Stand 130, to be occupied by the British Trailer Co., Ltd. There are four rear wheels in line. This company will also exhibit a 12-tonner of the same length, but 7 ft. 3 in. wide, and both these vehicles will incorporate B.T.C. front-support screws adjustable for height.

Taskers will show a 15-ton straightframed semi-trailer with the four rear wheels mounted in line in pairs on separately oscillating axles. This will be another new model and will have a body 26 ft. long. Two 10-ton straightframed types may be examined, one with a 20-ft. body and the other having body cross-bearers and a headboard made of light alloy.

Range of Lengths A typical 12-ton serni-trailer will be exhibited by Hands, who make vehicles of this capacity in lengths from 20 f L35 ft. A 4-5-ton semi-trailer will incorporate Hands BK automatic pick-up gear and will be fitted with a 15-ft.-Iong body.

Eagle will display a 10-12-ton platform semi-trailer with a pressed-steel chassis of ladder-frame construction and tyres interchangeable with those of the Crossley tractor. An 8-ton semitrailer will be shown with a special body designed for the transport of wholesale groceries. Of composite construction, this body will have three adjustable rubber curtains so that loads may be divided for ease of unloading at retail premises.

J. Brockhouse and Co., Ltd., will exhibit a 10-ton 'platform semi-trailer and a .boxvan semi-trailer connected to a Thames 4D tractor on Stand 129.

This ,company are also in the lightvehicle field and will show a 15-cwt. and a 10-cwt. model. Also in this class are B. Dixon-Bate, Ltd. (Stand 133), who will exhibit a steel-bodied 1-ton semi-trailer, and Scottorn, Ltd. (Stand 135), whose 15-cwt. type may be inspected.

Export Products Scottorn will make a feature of a lightweight tank semi-trailer stated to' be easily towable by small four-wheel drive vehicles.as the 250 Mark 11, it ill have a D-shaped galvanized tank with two inbuilt tubular transverse bearers. Provision has been made in the design for the attachment of members to carry pumps, filters and hoses. Another Scottorn product will have a 120-gal. galvanized tank. This new exhibitor has concentrated mainly on export markets. Dixon-Bate will have a 220-gal. tanker semi-trailer on their stand. Designed for loading by one man the D.-B. 2/45K trailer, also to be shown, is Intended for the . carriage of oil drums and has a detachable roller-chain winch. Two to-olcart semi-trailers of -8-cwt. and 18-cwt. capacity, •a 3-ton low-loading trailer for the transport of cable drums and a mobile office will complete the display.

Hands will exhibit a cable-drum carrier with a 4-toii capacity. Its independent suSpension system may be inspected. The outfit, which weighs less than a ton, may be towed empty by light vehicles, as the braking system works on the overrun as well as beingoperable by vaciium.' The company _ will also show a 5-ton trailer designed for the mounting of an oilfield drilling rig.

Four wheeled trailers

will be found on tne stands of tour exhibitors. The Taskers model will be a 3-tonner with a 12-ft.-long body, whilst those of B.T.C., Dyson and Eagle will be 8-tonners. The Dyson trailer is built from die-pressed members of high-tensile steel, mainly secured by cold-squeeze riveting, and will incorporate a patented drawbar.

Carrimore will display a car transporter semi-trailer, the upper deck of which can be lowered to ground level by hydraulic rams operated from a pump coupled to a power .take-off on

the tractor. This outfit will incorporate the Carrinaore patented retractor turntable.

Coupling gear and other components will, be exhibited separately by B.T.C., Brockhouse, Crane, Dyson, Hands and Taskers. B.T.C. claim that their fourin-line bogie extends tyre life by a minimum of 25 per cent., and that their spring-loaded coupling is unique. Brockhouse automatic coupling gear is interchangeable with Scammell and Karrier .1-type equipment.

Exhibiting•in the accessOry and component section on-Stand 430M, Davies Magnet Works, Ltd., will display five of their fifth-wheel couplings for articulated vehicles. One of these will be a heavy-duty universal-oscillating type. Three types of vertical landing gear, one of which is manufactured from hightensile light alloy, may be inspected.

Special features claimed fortheir equipment by the company include extension lengths to suit all heights of semi-trailer, oil-filled inner mechanisms for ample lubrication of the jack nut and screw, and three types of axle base —rigid, rubber-mounted and steerable.
