Like its competitors, MAN-ERF takes the used truck market seriously, which is why it's setting up a network of used truck centres. The first site is due to open in the next few weeks. Steve Banner reports.

MAN-ERF is setting up the first of a network of regional dedicated used truck centres on a site in Avonmouth.

Presently occupied by factoryowned dealership MAN-ERF Bristol, the 0.4hectare Nova Way outlet will trade under the MAN Diesel banner. It's expected to be fully operational by 1 December.

Controlled by the manufacturer's UK headquarters in Swindon, the new site will have its own general manager and team of used vehicle sales specialists, plus a workshop.Aftersaies support staff will be provided by nearby MAN-ERF dealership SA Trucks.

"The Avonmouth site will carry a stock of approximately 50 vehicles and around half of them will be tractor units." says Michael Leeming, MANERF's director of asset management and used vehicles. "The 7.5-18-tonners will be well represented too; we'll be aiming to sell a total of around 240 trucks annually. Typically we'll be talking about three to five-year-old ex-contract vehicles."

Leeming adds that other regional centres will be set up "in areas where we're not selling the volumes of used trucks that we feel we ought to be... we reckon we can get a bit more out of the used truck market than we do at the moment."

Most centres are likely to be at dealerships already operated by the manufacturer, but there could be scope for involvement by independently owned MAN-ERF outlets.

SA Trucks MD Henry Dilloway believes it will benefit his dealership by boosting parts and labour sales: "We sell around 60 to 70 used trucks a year, but it's not my intention to continue with this activity."
