POLICE HAVE REPEATED warnings that criminals are using new tactics to get insider information about haulage firms and target valuable loads.

The move comes after a Sussex operator was the victim of an 'infiltration deception' when a caller posing as his customer rang to say that his £250,000 load of tobacco should be sent for destruction at a depot in Canning Town. The operator arranged for the goods to be redelivered and the crime was only discovered when the legitimate customer rang the operator to find out where his goods were.

DS Mark Hooper from Truck poi reports a spate of truck crimes in which operators have been phoned by someone from "head office" or "customer services" at another company. The caller asks a series of questions about delivery habits, such as the identity of their manager, who takes care of deliveries and how they change delivery addresses.

Thieves then use this information to target specific operators and valuable loads.

"It is so easy to stop these crimes," says Hooper. "All companies have to do is check details and ask for written evidence to show who they are dealing with."
