MIDLAND EXPRESSWAY (MEL) has once again refused to say how many trucks are using the M6 Toll, despite claims that numbers have "increased substantially" since the price was cut from £11 to £6 in July.
The toll operator's latest results show that traffic using the route rose 8% in September to 52,041 vehicles, compared with 47,986 in June. Managing director Tom Fanning says the take-up by hauliers since the price cut has been encouraging.
However, an FTA spokes woman says that despite repeated re-quests to MEL it does not know how many trucks use the route: "£5 was the level we were looking at originally. It's much more sensible but it's still only a temporary reduction. We have to see whether it becomes permanent to encourage more trucks onto the road."
A recent CM/Michelin survey confirmed that the price cut had made the route more attractive: of the 150 we spoke to 26.5% use the M6 Toll now, compared with 15% when it was first launched (CM 23 September).
