Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The prospect of the pedestrianisation of Aberdeen's main thoroughfare and shopping street has infuriated hauliers who say the move would at least double longdistance trunking costs.

The transport arm of one major retailer with six outlets in Aberdeen says pedestrianisation of Union Street would force it to double vehicles servicing its stores in the city as drivers battle to hit strict delivery windows— the company sends 10 trucks into Aberdeen every week. The retailer says drivers also face potentially dangerous long working days and more nights out, adding an average £100 to each journey, if the move goes ahead.

Grampian Regional Council is currently considering pedestrianisation of Elgin, with vehicles banned between 10:00 and 16:00hrs.

It is also funding a study into the effects of banning LGVs at peak times in Union Street The move follows pedestrianisation of St Nicholas Street in Aberdeen, central routes in Ayr, Inverness and Paisley, and a proposal to ban vehicles from the Royal Mile in Edinburgh (CM 26 Aug-1 Sept).
