PERTH haulier Grampian Freight has been ordered to take a lorry off the road during October by the deputy Licensing Authority, J. Dalgety.

The company had been called before the DLA after the vehicle — which had been left parked — moved and struck a motorcycle. Grampian was required to show why its licence should not be revoked, suspended or prematurely terminated or curtailed under Section 69 (1) of the Transport Act 1968.

Seven defects

It was stated that seven defects were found in the vehicle — three of which merited immediate attention.

The DLA was told that the vehicle had been fitted with one crossply and one radial tyre on the front axle. The offside front tyre was perished and the walls were bulging. The handbrake was also found to be defective.

Graham Mathewson, for the firm, claimed that the lorry had been taken from the firm's premises without permission. He said the firm's engineer was due to inspect it next day. However, one of the employees had taken it home without authority.

Reprimanded

The vehicle had been parked at the kerbside but had moved forward and struck the motorcycle. It had since been scrapped and the driver severely reprimanded.

"I was horrified to hear it had been taken out of the workshop," said Mr Mathewson.

Mr Dalgety told him: "I can't feel satisfied with your explanation as to why this dangerous vehicle should have been allowed on the road." He curtailed the licence by removing one vehicle from the road for the month of October.
