SPECIALIST in the manufacture of ...)flywheel ring gears for electric starters, G. H. Rodway, Ltd., 90, Moor Street, Birmingham, 4, has just introduced a new type, which is so designed that its angular position on the flywheel can be readily altered, in relation to the throws of the crankshaft.

Chiefly because the maximum load always comes in the same places on ring gears, due to the compression of the engine, 'the teeth at these parts wear more rapidly than those else where. Thus it is desirable, when signs of wear begin to appear, to move the ring around ' on the flywheel, through 90 degrees in the case of a fourcylindered engine, or 120 degrees in the case of a " six," and to fix it in the new position. On the latest Rodway ring, which is machined to a sliding fit on the flywheel, three or four wide keyways ale formed in the bore, which fit on to square-section keys spaced around the flywheel rim or square-headed screws similarly spaced and arranged radially. The ring is secured in position by a corresponding number of clamping screws inserted into the face of the flywheel rim, with washers, or head flanges overlapping the starter ring, and holding it against a shoulder.

In order to afford full interchangeability in respect of angular position, ring and flywheel are accurately divided for the keyways and

holes. The number of keys or keyscrews employed may not need to i a so great as the number of keyways.
