Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Douglas Corporation's Purchase of T.S. Electric transmission 34-Seater Buses.

ACCOMPANYING this brief article is an illustration of one of the T.S. petrol-electric buses which T.S. Motors, Ltd. (formerly Tilling-Stevens Motors, Ltd.), of Iddesleigh House, Caxton Street, London, S.W.1, and of Maid! stone, has recently supplied to the tramways department of Douglas Corporation. This municipal body is a constant user of the petrol-electric type of vehicle, and has built up a useful and creditable fleet on frequent repeat orders to this old-established manufacturing concern.

The chassis of the vehicle illustrated is the latest type TS17A model, and embodies servo operation of the four-wheel brakes and C.A.V. AMT-type electriclighting equipment. The front tyres are 36-in. by 8-in, singles, and the rear tyres 38-in. by 7-in, twin pneumatics.

In the design of this vehicle the motor and dynamo have been so arranged as to giv9.the lowest possible floor line, and wherever allowable weight has been reduced without sacrificing efficiency. The wheelbase is 16 ft. and the front track 6 ft. 1 in.; the height of the frame

loaded is just 2 ft., although the 'groundclearance so far as 14 ft. 6 ins, back

ward from the front dumbirons is 101 ins., the clearance under the back axle being 5-Ar in. The body space from the dash to the end of the frame is 21 ft. i in. The four-cylindered engine has a bore of 41 ins. and a stroke of 6 ins., and develops 95 b.h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m.

It is evident that the.. all-round smoothness of running, with 'ease of control in traffic, which arises from the elimination of the orthodox gearbox, not

to mention the reduction of abrupt :stresses due to the type of transmission employed, are advantages which appeal to the Douglas officials. The bodies in connection with the recent order, including that shown in the accompanying picture, were constructed by the Northern Counties Motor and Engineering Co., Ltd., of Wigan..

The T.S. petrol-electricchassis is, of course, also built as a six-wheeler, in which form it is used by such operators as Wolverhampton Corporation and the Merseyside Touring Co., Ltd., of Liverpool.
