Electric Vehicle Committee.

The last meeting of the Electric Vehicle Committee took place at the Institution of Electrical Engineers, on the 1st in.st, under the chairmanship of Mr. R. A. Chattock, of Birmingham. Mr. V. Mason took his seat on the Committee as the reprssentative of the Light Railways and Tramways Association. The Committee chiefly dealt

with additional propaganda in connection with publicity, and the reports in regard to its official quarterly organ, "The Electric V ehiL cle," were considered highly satisfactory. The Technical sub-committee is at the present time particularly occupied on the standardization of details in connection with lead-plate batteries.

Licences for Male Servants.

We had cause in issues of August of last year and March of the present year, to deal with a ease which was raised by the L.C.C., against the owner of a sample-carrying motorcar, Mn E. J. Perry, an upholsterer. The L.C.C. demanded the taking-out of a mate-servant licence, under the Revenue Act uf 1869. The Court of Appeal, we may remind our readers, referred the matter back to the magistrate who had convicted, for him to decide whether such a driver performed services of a menial or domestic nature, this being held to be the true test in the matter.

It will be very satisfactory to large numbers of owners to learn that, when this case came on for hearing, on the reference back, on a recent date, the representative of the L.C.C. intimated that it was not intended to proceed further with it, whereupon the summons was formally withdrawn. We are glad that the L.C.C. has, although tardily, abandoned this particular branch of activity in the direction of hampering traders.

At Scottish Commercial Cars, Ltd., Glasgow.

It. was our pleasure during a recent visit to the North to pay a call upon Mr. T: Barry Cole, one of the directors of Scottish Commercial Cars Co., Ltd. We found the works, of which the official address is 98, lake Street, Glasgow, very busy indeed erecting Caledon chassis. This useful weight-carrier was evolved entirely by the company, and judicious use has been made of certain well-proved components and accessories. notably the Dorman engine. Mr. Cole showed us exanipleS of each of what are really four types' of machines, although they are only in effect live-axle and chain-drive variants of two models. We devoted several pages in our issue of the 2nd September to a description of this range of machines.

Some of the area of the large shops in Duke Street was, on the occasion of our visit, occupied by part of a recent consignment of Vida cans, machines which are, it will be recalled from information which has already been published in our columns, reminiscent of certain early Commercar designs, although the machine in its present •form re • seinbies Luton methods only in respect of comparatively unimportant details.

The Vulcan is a taking-looking machine and should provea useful line in the present circumstances to this enterprising Scottish house. The company, of course, retains its sole agency for Scotland for Commercars and is looking forward, now that Government restrictions on the civilian output are being eased, to renewing the very considerable business which it, in pre-war times, maintained in connection with the sale of these well-known British models throughout North Britain.
