A REPORT by MPs into the controversial European Arrest Warrant (EAW), which has led to lorry drivers being extradited abroad, has branded it "fundamentally flawed':
The Home Affairs Select Committee said the UK receives disproportionately more warrants from overseas than it issues, often for relatively minor crimes. It said the House of Commons must vote on whether it stays part of the EAW system — and if it does, then the process must be reformed.
Libby McVeigh, head of law reform at human rights charity Fair Trials International (FTI), said: "We hope this report persuades the UK government and politicians in Brussels to reform the arrest warrant to prevent cases of injustice. The arrest warrant is an important crime-fighting tool but, without reform, it will continue to be used inappropriately with devastating human consequences."
