Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

UNEMPLOYMENT in Scotland stands at 14 per cent of the working population. In Glasgow and the West of Scotland the figure is closer to 17 per cent.

Against this backcloth of misery, the Scottish Motor Trade Association opens the doors of Kelvin Hall today for the 53rd Scottish Motor Show. It is a brave and bold display of confidence in the future.

While Scotland and Clydeside have suffered the effects of recession and unemployment for most of this century, they have survived — and prospered. They will again.

We have found pockets of confidence already emerging; we have witnessed the pride of the operators who have survived. At Shotts, the Cummins engine men displayed no sign of despair. At Irvine, the Volvo/Ailsa men take as much pride as ever in their product.

Alexanders, the bodybuilders, can look with equal pride on their achievements in both the domestic and export markets. And there are others, from Gray and Adams in the North to Penman in the South. All could be busier, but they are happy to be in business. They have earned their survival.

CM is the only road transport publication supporting the Scottish Show with a presence in Kelvin Hall. We are pleased to be associated with those who are winning the battle for survival.
