• Overseas Containers Ltd. and Associated Container Transportation, who have been operating their UK-Australia container services from European ports because of the ban on operations from their Tilbury terminal, have announced that their Far East • container services due to start at the end of 1971 will operate from Southampton.
Both London and Liverpool were in cornpetition for this service but the selection of Southampton, due to its good geographical position for the Continent and the Far East, will mean a possible loss of up to 1.8 million tons of Far East trade from these two ports.
To provide the necessary services at Southampton the British Transport Docks Board is planning an £1 1m development which will include a 2,100ft deep water quay and 50 acres of paved marshalling area.
Approval for this development is expected from the Minister of Transport next month.
• Mann and Son (London) Ltd. is now operating grou page services under the name of North Sea Groupage from London to Brussels, Copenhagen. Hamburg and Helsinki and vice versa.
