Whatever the ills of the country might be, the British road transport industry as a whole is in good heart. There is ample evidence to prove it.
Subjected to a welter of legislation from Westminster and Brussels, operators, suppliers and manufacturers continue to meet their customers' demands at home and abroad. Despite a serious shortage of permits, operators are still providing as good as and often a better service to Europe and the Middle East than their cross-Channel competitors.
The manufacturing industry was a victim of its own success ten years ago when its order books were full and its European competitors edged into the market. As a result, British operators who traditionally bought at the lowest possible price began to want and were prepared to pay for cab comfort and quality. The home-made product improved and today it can stand comparison with any.
The British organise driver and management training schemes which are the envy of both Europe and the Middle East. We have all learned a lot in the past ten years and now it is going into practice.
Not long ago it was foolishly fashionable for us to demean ourselves. Happily we are getting back to the day when we will say with every justification ; British is best.
