Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

One million Land-Rovers

The Land-Rover—Workhorse of the World by Graham Robson. Published by David and Charles. Price: £4.95.

THE FIRST Land-Rover was delivered in July 1948 and last June the millionth was constructed. So runs the success story of the Land-Rover which has just been documented by Graham Robson and will be published on May 27.

As well as providing a comprehensive picture of the development of one of the world's most famous vehicles, the book is full of some humorous asides and Mr Robson is not above making a few gibes at the company. For example in the chapter entitled "The production jigsaw" he says : "Do not show a production expert around the LandRover production lines and expect him to be happy. He might be amazed, he might be a touch incredulous—but he will not be impressed."

The various uses to which Land-Rovers have been put are described in the book. Everyone knows about the go-anywhere capabilities of the vehicle in its normal state, but did you know, for example, that it has been the subject of a hovercraft conversion to keep the wheels off the ground when crossing newly seeded farmland ?

The author mentions that the Rover company had to discontinue the preparation of "specials" intended for longdistance treks such as TransAfrica or London to Bombay. Instead it confined its help to advice only and for this it published a Guide to LandRover Expeditions.

Besides recommendations on driving methods and medical care this book includes such priceless gems of information as "A convenient way of washing clothes while travelling is to put them in a waterproof, sealed container in the back of the vehicle with a suitable amount of water and washing powder. After 100 miles they should be clean ! " G.S.M.
