IT IS understood that the first model of a new range of heavy trucks—codenamed T45—to take Leyland into the 1980s will be a 35-tonne tractive unit replacement for the Buffalo. Leyland is believed to be considering the use of the turbocharged 511 engine or a similar unit to the TL12 currently used in the Marathon.
It is on the transmission side that Leyland seems to be moving away from its current engineering thinking.
At present the Leyland heavies such as Buffalo, Bison and Marathon use various models from the Fuller range-change series. It is thought that the new T45 series will use the Spicer SST-10 ten-speed splitter box from the American Dana Corporation.
This gearbox is unfamiliar to European operators although it is now beginning to be used in the 38-tonne TM Bedford in conjunction with the V8 Detroit Diesel power unit.
The second model from the T45 range is expected to be a 25-tonne 6x4 replacement for the Bison with a high power version of the 511 engine. For the eventual Marathon replacement it is rumoured that both ZF and Spicer gearboxes are being considered.
