BRITISH RAIL seemed too easily disposed to get rid of freight traffic, complained Mr Bob Cryer (Labour, Keighley) in the Commons last week.
He suggested that legislation, similar to the TUCC system regarding passenger service withdrawals, should be brought in to deal with freight.
Mr Peter Shore, the Environment Secretary, replied that he would consider what Mr Cryer had said about consultation procedures.
But though freight services were not subject to statutory consultative procedures it did not necessarily mean that there were no informal procedures affecting particular freight services.
