Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

certain chemical products to Continental countries with our own vehicles in the near future and we have been informed that there are special regulations which must be observed under an ECE Agreement in such cases. Could you supply some details of the Agreement and the particular products which it covers?

AThe Agreement you refer to is the "Inland Carriage of Dangerous Goods By Road" (ADR) prepared by a Working Party of the Inland Transport Committee of the Economic Commission for Europe. The text of the Agreement was originally published in 1959 and subsequent annexes in 1967.

The purpose of the Agreement is to ensure that dangerous goods arriving at a frontier by road have been safely packed and are being safely carried.

The parties to the Agreement undertake that the transport by road of dangerous goods through their territories will be permitted provided that the goods are packed in accordance with, and are carried in vehicles complying with, the Agreement and the annexes to it.

The list of substances covered by the Agreement is as follows: explosive substances and articles; articles filled with explosive substances; igniters, fireworks and similar goods; gases, compressed, liquefied or dissolved under pressure; substances which give off inflammable gases on contact with water; substances liable to spontaneous combustion; inflammable liquids; inflammable solids; oxidising substances; toxic substances: radioactive substances; corrosive substances; repugnant substances and substances liable to cause infection, and organic peroxides. This list provides only the major headings under which products are classified. The annexes to the Agreement list all the substances in detail.

Copies of the Agreement and of the two annexes A and B (the former relating to the packing and labelling and the latter to the provisions with which the vehicles must comply) can be obtained from HMSO.
