Tottenham Municipal Authorities Testify to the Efficient Working of A.E.C. Monarch Refuse Collectors Equipped
with "Ideal" Bodies
A FEW weeks ago the cleansing de
partment of Tottenham Borough Council placed in service some A.E.C. Monarch petrol-engined refuse collectors with Ideal bodies, and, in a short period of service, the outfits have revealed their simplicity of working, and the value of a big capacity and quick discharge.
Apart from the necessity of extending the normal short wheelbase from 12 ft. 1 in. to 12 ft. 7 ins, and the lowering of the subframe by 30 mm. to allow for the tipping gear the fitring of the Ideal body on the Monarch chassis has involved no alterations. The engine employed for this model is a four-cylindered unit, with a bore and stroke of 112 ram. and 130 mm, respectively, and it develops a maximum of s0. b.h.p. at 2,200 r.p.m.
it has been shown in service that the Ideal refuse collector, which is loaded from the rear, causes less hindrance to traffic than do the more orthodox types of vehicle, and that it gives the loaders greater protection from passing vehicles. Furthermore, as the loading height remains constant at 4 ft. 4 iris. from the ground, -no steps or ladders are required. The loading height is maintained by the action .of the collector rotating upwards to an elevation of 110 degrees and continually emptying the contents of the rear hopper into the main container.
The compartment between the container and the driver's cab is used for accommodating large articles, such as iron bedsteads, old bedding, etc., and, on the initial journey between the depot and the first point of collection it enables six loaders to be carried.
In the case of the vehicles employed at Tottenham, the container is raised seven times during each round, and during each intervening period some 40-50 bins of house refuse are emptied into the rear hopper.
This type of refuse collector is simple to operate. The tipping screw, which is operated by a power take-off from the gearbox, is set in action by the movement of a projecting handle, and its speed is regulated by a supplementary throttle-control lever. No
n..30 moving parts are at any time in contact with the refuse.
For discharging, the container is tipped rearwards to an angle of about 60 degrees, which enables the load to be precipitated well above the hopper. At Tottenham it has been shown that the container can be completely cleared in 20 seconds and that a vehicle can be away on the next round within a period of five minutes. In the short time that the collectors have been at work at Tottenham it has been shown that three Ideal machines are capable of doing the work of four ordinary vehicles, a feature that is attributable to the fact that, although provided with 15-cubic-yd. containers, the compression of the contents by vertical elevation and pounding enables each unit to carry 22 cubic yds. of refuse.
