WRITING to congratulate you on a really good article about owner-drivers (CM 21 February) concerning Malcolm Tweddall and his hard-working, but immaculate, 8x4 Foden bulk tipper. I enjoy reading such articles about how others cope, how they feel, what wagons they run, what they deal with and who and what they serve. We should be really proud of these operators.
The general public is ignorant about LGVs and how they operate, and it's clear that this country needs people like Mr Tweddall to keep it running properly. It's not just the Eddie Stobarts and Hargreaves that manage to do this, but the single owner-drivers and small fleets, like Jack Richards or Bartletts, that do it too.
It's good to see publications like CM out there doing their best to get across to Joe Public that LGVs are not all big, smelly things that clog up the road network just for the hell of it.
The industry is a lot more interesting than people think and, thanks to yourselves and men like Mr Tweddall, I believe we are getting there. Some sort of promotion is worth thinking about. The good and successful people, and their true and honest stories, far outweigh the bad and negative.
