COMMENT

In January, a two-year "trial" period began under which coaches will be banned from using the outside lane of motorways.

Newer coaches are limited to 65mph, while most HGVs have speed limiters set at 56mph.

DMany concerns were expressed that rather than contributing to road safety, the trial ban would cause added danger on motorways through bunching of commercial vehicles and coaches.

The Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) has publicly asked truck drivers to move over from the centre lane and allow coaches to pass. This view has been endorsed by the FTA.

ft There is no doubt that if an

• accident occurs when a coach fully loaded with passengers is sandwiched between two MA's, the consequences could be catastrophic.

While the proposal has been welcomed by car drivers and motoring organisations, it is likely to cause added stress to HGV drivers and coach drivers alike.

HGV drivers could well face the proposed prosecution in the event of accidents for careless or inconsiderate driving.

Could it be that the overtaking lane will truly become the "fast lane"? Watch this space...
