• The new man in charge of transport at the European Commission in Brussels is to be British.
Robert Coleman, a bureaucrat with the competition directorate, takes over from Eduardo Pena as director-general, making him right hand man to the Transport Commissioner Kakel van Miert, who is a semi-political appointee. Coleman does not have any prior transport experience. Pena is moving to another key post in the Commission, overseeing its administration.
CM predicted that a Briton would take over from Pena (CM 14-20 February), but the front runner then appeared to be Jim Currie, aide to competition commissioner Sir Leon Brittan.
