• A driver for Thirsk-based Calvert and Sons was criticised after his vehicle was given an immediate prohibition order for loose wheel nuts following a roadside check. But his employer escaped with a warning at disciplinary proceedings before North-Eastern Deputy LA Anthony Richardson.
Vehicle examiner Roy Kelly said that four nuts were not secure on one wheel and two were insecure on another. This could have resulted in the wheels coming off.
He also told the LA that an immediate prohibition notice was placed on a trailer which had a split tyre and that another was imposed for a seized load-sensing valve. Although there were problems with valves seizing, he had put it down to a lack of mainte
mince. Kelly said it was not suggested that a driver should use a wheel brace every day, but there were certain signs he should look for.
Stephen Kirkbright, for Calvert, said that when the vehicle started its journey there was no indication of loose wheel nuts. They could have started to come loose on the journey and it was not necessarily bad maintenance or the fault of the driver.
