• After a successful week-long strike by Italy's mainly self-employed HGV drivers which sparked off fuel shortages, higher food prices and alleged acts of violence on drivers who failed to support their colleagues, the Italian government has agreed to the strikers' main demands.
These are for motorway speed limits to rise from 80krtih to 90krnh; a 10% increase in freight charges and a government inquiry into the whole road haulage sector, ahead of the EEC harmonisation of the industry scheduled for 1992.
The agreement has come under fire from employers who accused the government of surrendering to the threat of violence by the drivers.
