• German bus builder Neoplan, already selling double-deck coaches in the UK, is now examining the single-deck city bus market. A spokesman for Carlton PSV, Neoplan's UK distributor, confirmed this week that the company was contemplating the sale in the UK of its standard VON/ bus, modified as necessary to meet British operating conditions. These could include the fitment of a Gardner engine.
• A series of coach speed surveys by the Department of Transport, conducted last August and November. show that 39% of buses and coaches exceeded the speed limit on dual carriageways and 18% exceeded the motorway limit. These figures represent a 7% decrease in the proportion of PSVs speeding on motorways, but an increase of 9% in the number of PSVs speeding on dual carriageways, compared with the results of a 1985 survey.
• Transport Secretary John Moore claims that following deregulation at least 75% of all bus services are operating without a subsidy. Moore also says that deregulation resulted in the introduction of 700 new services and a 50% increase in the number of passengers carried by coach.
