Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

parties told the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners, on Tuesday, that when they engaged •Sansom Bros. (Sheffield), Ltd., they did• not stand losses if the coaches were not filled. Sometimes Mr. Sansom quoted the fare and was paid only for the number of seats booked, and on other occasions the fares were paid directly to him.

After hearing this, Mr, F. Marshall submitted that the organizers were in reality only collectors for Sansom's. He was appearing for five operators who opposed Sansom's request for the addition of coastal resorts to their excursion licences (The Commercial Motor, February 21).

Witnesses said that when only two or three seats on a coach were empty other members of the party might share the cost to pay for a full load. Mr. Sansom .decided whether trips should run..

Mr. G. Milner gave evidence for Sansom's on behalf of the Darnall branch of the Amalgamated Engineering Union and the Handsworth and District Old Age Pensioners' Association, Ho pointed out that there were 20,000 people in the Handsworth area who deserved a local service.

• .For British Railways, Mr. T, B. Atkinson said there was no reason why Handsworth should be treated differently from other Sheffield suburbs.

Mr. W. Hargrave, for Sheffield United Tours, Ltd., suggested that private-party difficulties were not evidence of need for

excursion. facilities. It had been suggested that there should be a grant for regular seaside trips because .private hire was falling off.

Before the hearing was.adjourned until March 26. Mr. K. Robinson. for. British Railways, said they carried 5,952 passengers an excursions from Darnall and Woodhouse last year to the coastal resorts Sansom's wanted to serve.. These stations were on each side of Handsworth.

MINISTER ENCOURAGES HAULIERS L'NCOURAGEMENT to hauliers was given by Mr. Harold Watkinson, Minister of Transport, at the annual dinner of the Metropolitan and South Eastern Area. ofthe Road Haulage Association in London on Monday. He emphasized the importance of the transport industry as part of the economy of the country. .

It was important that everyone should study the question of European free trade. Already certain agreements were being made in connection with road transport in the confident belief that the cause would progress. • • Britain had. everything to lose and • nothing to gain if road transport were again plunged into party strife. It would cause disunity, and would have a damaging effect on the views of the rest of the world. The Government would strongly oppose in every possible way putting the clock back. "
