The "Commercial" Carburetter.

While in Manchester during the recent Show, one of our representatives examined in detail the carburetter specially designed for use on commercial motors by C. finks, Ltd. We. have had an illustration of this de vice prepared for the benefit of our readers, and this gives a good general idea of the de

sign. This carburetter is of the two-jet type, a repr esentative system which is now much used when slow engine running and strong pulling powers are sine. qua nons. In t h e appliance under notice the separate jets are controlled b y mushroom valves 'c'2D4-rof the ordinary type. The employment of this class of valve dispenses with the necessity of having a rotating barrel to act as a throttle. The action of the carburetter is quite simple. When the engine is running slowly, or is being started up, the small petrol jet is utilized. As more power is called for, the larger jet is brought into play, the mushroom valves allowing this to be done without troublesome complications following. The maker claims that the vacuum in the induction .pipe when the small jet is in use has no effect on the larger jet, and this being so, waste of fuel is largely prevented. An extra air lever is fitted, which can be geared to act with the throttle-lever, or can be independently operated. Six jets of varying sizes, which can be easily and quickly fitted, are sent with each carburetter, and a little experimental work should ensure every engine fitted with this device giving the maximum power and efficiency without waste. Provision has been made for the heating of the appliance from the exhaust pipe or other convenient hot surface.

The carburetter is strongly made, and should be able to stand a great amount of heavy usage, owing to the elimination of flimsy levers and unlubricated rotating parts. So confident is the maker that its carburetter will give the utmost satisfaction in all cases, that he is willing to give an unconditional warranty for two years. Exhibited at Manchester.

A Useful Truck for Garages.

A small brass model of the Slingsby sliding-wheel truck has reached us from Mr. H. C. Slingsby, together with a catalogue, profusely illustrated, and containing many pages of text. descriptive of this maker's manifold specialities. The diminutive truck which has reached the editorial office has been pressed into service by a member of the staff for transporting material across his desk ! That it has at all times so far safely conveyed its burden over this extremely rough and disorderly road is a fine tribute to its general steadiness and reliability. The full-sized truck should be of great value in garages for transporting repairs and castings from one part of the shop to another. The patent sliding wheels with

which it is fitted enable it, to be turned in a remarkably small compass, and difficult corners can be easily negotiated.

Motor Brakes and Clutches.,

The Herbert Frood Co., Ltd., form'arcls its new list dealing with brake and clutch linings. Th:s is a cleverly compiled brochure, and it is printed in a novel form wh.ch removes the necessity of twisting and turning the list upside down and sideways in order to examine the illustrations. The 20-years record of this concern is almost sufficient in itself to guarantee the quality of its products. The list gives particulars of all the supplies necessary to fit. " Ferodo " brake and clutch linings ; it includes rivets, screws, clamps and saws. Instructions are given for the fitting of fibre clutches, as also are many other useful hints and tips for this particular class of work. The list should be obtained and kept constantly in mind for reference by heavy vehicle users, when clutch and brake linings are calling for renewal.

Solid Rubber Tires for all Purposes.

The Midland Rubber Co., Ltd., of Birmingham, forwards a set of its 1912 catalogues, which illustrate and describe many different types of solid-rubber tires. The company has paid special attention to its band tires for use on both steel and wooden wheels. These are made interchangeable, and are easily pressed into position. Designed for use on both plain and flanged rims, these tires are made of many different sections and strengths, and are intended to meet. the requirements of commercial vehicles of all descriptions, from the half-ton delivery-van to the five-ton steamer. A special feature is made of the "Ajax " solid-band tire, which has been tested with success on buses and other commercial vehicles. Users of molorvans will find much to interest them in these catalogues, which will be mailed to inquirers on request. A tribute to the value of the company's productions is afforded by the L,G.O.C,, which has recently placed a large order for Midland tires to be fitted to its buses.
