Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE UNITED PALLET Network (UPN) is to roll out a new service designed to win more of the e-commerce market and help members boost vehicle fill during quieter periods.

UPN Direct went live last week, and the network is in talks with haulier members about how it can complement their existing pallet business.

Designed to cater for ad hoc deliveries via small businesses that traditionally struggle to secure credit for more formal arrangements, UPN Direct features a pricing model similar to that used by budget airlines and the hotel industry.

During quieter periods, the price of sending a pallet using the service will be lower than peak periods, something UPN commercial director Dave Brown says will provide “a new sales avenue and benefit our members”.

Although the network claims an above sector-average fill rate of 85%, Brown believes the new service could boost this further, improving efficiency for members and taking the fill rate to 90%-95%.

A formal marketing push for the service will follow later this year.

UPN has welcomed nine new members to the network during a productive first half of the year.
