• Castle Morpeth Council in Northumberland is under fire from the National Union of Public Employees after awarding a five-year/£500,000 refuse collection contract to Londonbased Cory Environmental (formerly Cory Onyx).
Redundancy notices have been handed out to 34 refuse workers — half of them drivers — since the contract fell into private hands.
Phil Lenton, NUPE's area officer, claims the redundancy notices are illegal as they were not preceded by any formal consultations with trade unions.
