Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Registrations of trucks over 3.5 tonnes slumped nearly 37% in May compared with the same period last year, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Sales were 4,022 against 6,338 in May 1989; year to date figures were 23,204 — down 27.4%.

Iveco Ford took the lead with 882 sales giving it a 21.9% share. Mercedes-Benz was second with 18.7% and Leyland Daf was relegated into third place from its premier position in April, with 716 sales — a market share of 17.8%.

Everyone else suffered losses including Volvo in fourth place — sales slumped 44% to 378. Renault Trucks followed with 297 sales and ERF came sixth with 249.

Next came Scania (203); MAN (170); and Foden (104). Seddon Atkinson was tenth with 99 sales followed by AWD with 93.

On a year-to-date basis, however, Iveco Ford has retained pole position, just ahead of Leyland Daf.
