• Increased investment in transport infrastructure and a new approach to road safety were called for by delegates at the IRU congress.
It wants European governments to invest in transport infrastructure according to the needs of users, with priority being given to homogeneous single-mode networks, which will serve the economy at the lowest cost.
To achieve this, the IRU says there should be better links in remoter regions, better links across the Alps and the elimination of bottlenecks at frontiers.
On road safety, it wants governments to encourage drivers to act more responsibly and for governments to build better roads and .erect clearer traffic signs.
