• The IRU has awarded its Grand Prix d'Honneur West German driver Hermann Bolte for his braver on September 4 last year, when he risked his life at the scene of an accident.
Two persons were unloading highly flammable chemicals from a lorry when an explosion occurred, starting a fire. Th persons involved were seriously burned and take to hospital.
Bolte was nearby and saw that the lorry was stil burning. He got behind th wheel and drove the expk sive load into a field about 100m away. The fire wen out as a result of wind effect while driving, Having finished his act bravery, Bolte got into hi: own lorry and continued h delivery round.
An international jury ha selected Bolte the winner for the award of Grand P1 d'Honneur, which is given every two years in recognition of an outstandinj act of bravery. The prize consists of a diploma, a gc pin, and a cash gift.
