A GOVERNMENT inquiry has been ordered into Ireland's road haulage industry.
Irish Transport Minister Albert Reynolds has asked the Transport Consultative Commission, which. reported earlier this year on Dublin's public transport, to look at the country's domestic and international haulage.
He has asked the TCC to forecast the likely growth in demand for road haulage over the next five years, and to consider whether there might be a move from the present quantity licensing to a British-style liberalised quality system.
The TCC will also look at the cost structure of the international industry, compared with those of Northern Ireland and British operators, and it will investigate the need for greater enforcement of existing legislation.
Interested parties have been given until the end of this month to submit their views to the Commission.
