MOST British commercial vehicle manufacturers have star or are about to start laying off workers due to the recessioi the market.
Bedford will lay off 5,000 employees at its Ellesmere Port and Luton plants for two weeks starting on Monday, June 16, although production of CF vans will not be affected.
Meanwhile, Fodens have started a four-day week which will continue for at least three weeks, while ERF and Seddon Atkinson embark on three-day working weeks.
Ford is also reducing output in June and 1,400 employees are having four extra days off during the month. Most companies are reviewing the situa tion weekly and of the manu turers we spoke to, only Leyl and Dodge are working r mally.
