NATIONAL Freight Corporation's Scottish operations have been given until November to improve their performance, otherwise radical changes will have to be made.
A Corporation spokesman told CM this week that this was the main conclusion of a survey (CM, March 1) which was ordered in response to a marked downturn in its Scottish trading last year.
The report, which was carried out by the managements of Scottish Road Services, Roadline UK, and National Carriers, found that action is needed, and NFC told CM that the companies must generate sufficient profits to replace assets and service their capital.
The spokesman added: "The Corporation does not consider that it would be appropriate to implement a major change in 1980. But by the end of November, it should be clear whether we are breaking even.
"If such an improvement is not achieved, more radical action, possibly involving a reduction in resources and a reorgan isation, will become necessary."
The three companies have already begun to implement a series of action plans to combat immediate problems, and these include the dovetailing of collection and delivery services in rural areas.
