IE LONG-AWAITED remote-area tachograph centre pulations have been annout:ced, and all three manufacturers preparing to take advantage of them.

rhe Department of Transport announced that modestly equipped calibration centres will be authorised where the surface route to the nearest fully equipped centre is over 25 miles.

There is no need to have a rolling road in the more remote stations, and there is no requirement for specific parking space to be provided outside as the minimum output need of 2000 vehicles per year will not apply.

A DTp spokesman added that the 4.5m headroom stipulation over bays has been reduced to 3.7m in the more remote centres.

The new centres will complement the 450 fully equipped centres planned by the DTp.

To date, Lucas Kienzle has had 14 serious inquiries about remote centres, and it envisages a total of 20. Veeder Root has three centres in for approval at present, and envisages a maximum of around 12. Smiths also are understood to have plans for these areas.

The Lucas scheme includes centres on Shetland, Orkney, and the Western Isles where transport costs would have been very heavy if operators had to depend on mainland centres.

It also has proposals for centres in the Scottish Highlands and Borders, South-west Wales, and in Cumbria.
