NEARLY 170 of the 1,200 managerial administrative and clerical posts at the West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive are to be lost as the PTE takes a critical look at the effectiveness of every white-collar job in its operations.
PTE director of labour relations Keith Barratt said that rising wage costs could only be paid for by greater efficiency and that this lesson must be learnt by the transport industry as it must by every other.
News of the planned cut-back has been given to the National and Local Government Officers Association (NALGO) which represents most of the PTE white-collar staff and full consultations have been promised.
WMPTE employs over 9,100 of whom 4,800 are drivers and 3,000 are engineering personnel.
