FOLLOWING on from the award of a contract to supply the German army with a small cross-country vehicle. Volkswagen has launched a civilian version of the same machine.
Known as the Iltis — German for Polecat — it is based around some of the major mechanical components used in the Volkswagen Golf. Already on sale in Germany, the Iltis will shortly be launched in Italy and France.
At the moment Volkswagen is looking into the feasibility of producing a right-hand-driVe version for the UK market, but there are no firm plans as yet.
The petrol engine has a capacity of 1714cc (105cuin) and produces 55kW (75bhp) at 500Orpm.
The rest of the driveline includes a four speed synchromesh gearbox, optional four-wheel drive and differential locks.
For a gross weight of two tonnes, the Iltis has a payload capability of 700kg (14cwt).
