AN OPERATOR who pleaded not guilty to a charge brought by the Warwick Constabulary under the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1973 Section 99, had his case dismissed at Warwick magistrates' court last Friday.
It was alleged that Mr J. Bainbridge of Elsworth, Cambridge, had used a vehicle fitted with a 700 x 14 tyre, the tread pattern of which did not have a depth of at least 1 mm throughout at least three-quarters of the breadth of the tread and round the outer circumference of the tyre.
Mr Bainbridge, who was driving a Bedford 35 cwt pick-up, contended that the tyre tread was not the depth of the groove but the amount of rubber above the lowest part of the tyre. He claimed that it would be impossible to measure the exact tread depth without cutting the tyre.
