MORE protests against the Mersey tunnel ban proposals on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) were made last week — this time from the Transport Committee of the Merseyside Chamber of Commerce and Industry, The Chamber has urged that regulations concerning the passage of LPG and other chemicals through tunnels should be standard throughout the country and restrictions should be compared with those included in the regulations covering the car riage of goods by sea.
Although the authorities sympathized with the possible consequences for hauliers of the restrictions proposed, the changes were based on the recommendations of the tunnel's safety consultant, the transport committee reported.
Expert chemists representing the RHA had been unable to persuade the consultant to alter his recommendations. The DoE is currently being asked for technical advice on the ban.
