• The first use of fully automatic transmission on a refuse collection vehicle in the UK was announced at the IPC Conference exhibition at Brighton on Wednesday. It is a Pakamatic 50 supplied to Westminster by Shelvoke and Drewry and has a GM Allison unit. Another Westminster SD is a street washer with conning-tower to give crews a clear view in crowded streets.
The new Lacre Compact suction sweeper on a Bedford chassis was on view, while from Dennis came a mini-maintenance collection unit with white glassfibre crew-cab and aluminium-panelled body. Late additions to the exhibitors included Initial Power Drive Ltd., showing a Mercedes 3-ton chassis with Pietsch spreader body. Applied Cleansing Economics Ltd. demonstrated a vacuum sweeper, and Eagle showed a 4,000 gal. cesspit emptier. A versatile pavement gritterspreader produced by Rolba Ltd. can be adapted to other duties during normal weather. Stanley Engineering showed a pedestrian battery-electric and a driven one with hydraulic tipping gear.
