Brake's licence comes to halt

• Lancashire owner-driver Graham Brake, trading as GB Haulage, of Hoscar, Lathom, near Ormskirk, has had his licence revoked by North Western Licensing Authority Martin Albu.
This followed Brake's second appearance at disciplinary proceedings within three months.
In March, the LA cut the duration of Brake's licence to expire two years early. His decision was conditional on Brake producing a copy of a contract he was said to
have with a freelance fitter for the maintenance of his vehicle (CM 24-30 March )
Albu said Traffic Area Office wrote to Brake on 29 March asking for a copy of his maintenance contract. They wrote again on 14 April. Brake replied on 20 April, saying the contract was sent 10 days previously and must have been delayed by a postal strike.
Challenged by the LA on whether he had a contract, Brake replied that it was a verbal one.
For Brake, John Backhouse said he now had a satisfactory maintenance contract with a commercial garage and in a day or so the vehicle would have gone through the annual test.
Revoking the licence, Albu said his policy was to give people a chance to "pull their socks up" and do the job properly.
Brake had been given that chance in March. However, he had failed to comply with what he was required to do at the last hearing.
